The Business Model

C2C e-commerce differs from a business-to-business model or a business-to-consumer model because consumers network directly with each other. However Dump De Fridge operates the online platform on which C2C transactions take place. Buyers can shop for free, although sellers will have to pay a competitive fee to list their products. Our consumers will play an active role in monitoring our e-commerce sites for scams and other inappropriate content.

The C2C model entails lower costs and higher profits for buyers and sellers. Sellers can store inventory in a home office or our own warehouse and distribution centre and it will cost less to market and distribute products than in a traditional business-to-consumer model. New, handmade and used goods can be sold through Dump De Fridge. Developments in technology and the simplicity of accessing the internet ease have also made it possible for individuals to launch profitable C2C e-commerce businesses.

Auction websites have recently sprung up all over the Internet and represent the most popular form of consumer-to-consumer e-commerce. Dump De Fridge will have its own unique selling points to differentiate its services within this sector.

If you are interested in our Business to Business services, contact Dump De Fridge via email or telephone without delay. We are a one stop shop for business, your business.

Understanding the Market for Start-Ups

Focusing on your customer

A successful business always focuses on its customers.

Without customers your business will struggle to trade, whether your business sells directly to consumers or to other businesses. If you can create a product or service that people want or need at a price that generates a suitable profit, you may find yourself with a good chance of launching and managing a successful venture.

Some business ideas fall at the first hurdle, for example some people find that there aren’t enough customers for their idea or that their prices are too high to be seen as attractive or too low to make a profit.

Many small enterprises rely on local trade, so always bear in mind where your customers are. For example if your idea is to start a hairdressing business, the fact that there are millions of people in the UK is irrelevant, the important question is how many people live in your local vicinity. Also there may be enough customers for your business product or service, but the problem is that at the moment they are somebody else’s customers.

Checking out the competition

Unless the product or service you offer is unique, there will be competition.

Most start-up businesses face rival firms offering similar products.

Even if you are planning on setting up the first Ukrainian restaurant in the area, you will still find yourself competing against all the other local food outlets. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing; at least it shows that people in your area are interested in buying your product or service.

But if you are thinking of setting up a business that doesn’t offer anything different or special this can be considered risky. This is because there won’t be anything to set your business apart from other established businesses and it will always be hard to make money when you are competing purely on price.

Advice to start-ups
  • You need to offer something that convinces customers to buy from you.
  • Ask yourself what benefits can your products or services offer.
  • What makes your business different.
  • How can you provide the best quality service or be better, friendlier and more convenient than the rest.
  • Can you offer something that your competitors don’t.
Finding your Market

Businesses become successful by targeting a small, distinct segment of a market (also known as a ‘niche’) to which they can become number one supplier for a large enough number of customers.

Having a good business idea can help you to define a niche market. An idea can tell you what sort of customers you should be looking for and what exactly they want, so that you know what you need to offer them.

If you cannot narrow down your target customers in this way, it doesn’t necessarily mean you have a bad idea – but it probably means you need to do a bit more thinking.

Personal & Market Evaluation

Understanding the importance of selling

When you start a business, very few if any people will know about it. You need to go out, find them and convince them to buy products or services from you.

You will need to think in detail about how to promote your business successfully and create sales. This could seem relatively simple for your business idea. For example, many local takeaway food outlets promote themselves by delivering leaflets door-to-door. Although most may end up in the household dustbin, at least some will have an impact and if there is a genuine demand, some may turn to sales.

Other business ideas, may not find it as easy to promote their business. You may need to meet potential customers face-to-face to present your product or service and explain how it works. But if each sale is going to be worth a small amount and requires you using a lot of time to sell directly to customers won’t be worth it. So rather than selling directly to individual customers, it might be more viable to your business to supply your product in bulk to other businesses.

Calculating your costs

Before putting a price on your product or service, you need to calculate all of the costs of your business so that you can price your product and make a profit.

As well as any materials you use, you need to cover the overheads. Even if your business operates from home, you will have to pay for things such as phone calls and utility bills.

If you receive legal advice, use an accountant or even employ people, these will need to be paid for. As well as having money left over to pay your own wages.

If you are going to sell form a shop, you need to consider the mark-up it will put on your product. Also to be considered is delivery costs, these can be recouped from each sale you make, but you will need to think about how you will incorporate these costs will make your prices to appear to the market.

Consider the cost of making sales, especially if you have to travel to meet your customers. If you only make one-off sales, the cost can be even higher, because you have to keep visiting new customers rather than getting repeat business.

Identifying the Implications

Running a business doesn’t always suit everyone. The chances are you will have to make sacrifices, such as working long hours, especially when trying to establish the business.

It includes taking sole responsibility for making important decisions about a wide range of key issues. It could mean having to do things you find difficult, impossible or just plain boring.

There will be new challenges you haven’t faced before, and quickly you will need to become comfortable making decisions about things you may not fully understand yet.

Some people find the pressure of running a business too much. Others can thrive off it. There will be days when you wonder why you ever did start your own business and there will be days when you think it was the best thing that you have ever done.

You have to think about how it will affect you life at home. Many people will have to balance the demands of running a business along with childcare and domestic responsibilities. Balancing all these factors can be challenging, but if you get it right running a business can provide the ideal of flexibility and freedom most people seek.

If you work from home, you may have to contend with noise and other unwelcome distractions. You need to consider how you would deal with such things.

Knowing your Finances

Being your own boss may give you a much better standard of living. Alternatively, you might have to settle for a drop in wages or none at all to start with. Even when you’re established, your personal pay might vary depending on how well your business is doing.

Now think about the practical considerations, such as how you will pay your rent or mortgage and other living costs. Starting your own business might involve tightening your spending; consider how this will affect your life and those around you.

Consider the possibility of becoming ill. It is wise to have some form of insurance in case you become seriously ill, because even having a heavy cold could mean losing income. If you are working on your own, particularly in early stages, you will have to find ways to minimise the impact on your customers of any lost time.

You will also need to think about your own personal future. It may be useful to speak to an adviser about your pension provision. As starting a business allows them to put their feet up sooner.

Remember there is an element of risk with any new venture, which is why many people choose to keep their day job while slowly building up a business in their spare time.

Importance of Start-Up Financing & Selling

What are your qualities?

If you are disciplined, committed, enthusiastic, determined and hardworking. An effective communicator who is able to sell yourself, ideas, or products time after time. Prepared to champion your business idea consistently, while others around you may not be as enthused then you should consider starting a business.

If you believe in yourself to succeed, others will. If not then others won’t believe in you either. To run a business you need to be patient, resourceful and persistent. There will be knock backs and you won’t always get everything right it’s how you deal with such situations that matter.

Are you an optimist who is prepared to take a long term approach? Overnight success stories are rare in the small business world. Do you remain calm when the pressure is on? You are more likely to make the correct decisions if you can. If you can identify yourself with any of these qualities then you are just the kind of person Dump De Fridge would like to associate with.

Overcoming your weaknesses

You don’t have to be an expert on everything to run a business; Dump De Fridge has plenty of experts are willing to help. Just contact us.

Marketing Priorities

Market research

Starting a business involves risks, although doing simple research on your market can help shift the odds in your favour. The more information you can find about your customers and competitors before launching, the easier it will be to make the correct decisions in the future.

You need to recognise who you plan to sell to and find out more about their habits and what they need as a consumer. It is easier to modify your product or service to suit your market, rather than trying to convince them to buy something they don’t want.

Don’t disregard weighing up the competition, find out who they are and what they offer, how, when, where and what price. Only then will you be able to find out you will compare.

Understanding your customers

There are a vast number of potential customers out there and also a lot of competitors too. Working out which customers you need target and understanding exactly what they want are the first steps to making sure they buy from you.

It is impossible to find out every detail about each customer. But a quick and effective way of finding out whether a person or business is likely to buy from you will decide if they are part of your target market.

Break it down

Each and every customer is different and to make things even more complicated consumer tastes and habits change. But placing customers into groups that share common tastes, habits and characteristics. These groups are called segments for example if you operate in the travel market you could break your customers down into business travellers and leisure travellers. Also, these two groups can be further segmented.

Within the leisure market there will be families looking for a child-friendly Mediterranean resort where they can spend a cheap week or two away during the summer. Whereas there will be young professionals looking for sun and alpine activities in the winter. Each segment will have different wants, needs and habits. For business travellers they want luxury travel with ticket flexibility and are prepared to pay for the privilege.

Areas to identify

There is the possibility of your business idea may naturally appeal to a specific segment. For example, if you sell luxury Caribbean holidays, it is likely to appeal to a customer segment that is made up of wealthier individuals.

Focusing as much as you can about the kind of customers you want to attract. For example, do you want your holidays to suit young couples on their honeymoons or holidays for those that have retired?

Those that are wealthy, big businesses and clients in the public sector may seem the most rewarding customers, but they can be the most demanding and also you are likely to face hard competition.

If you have found a segment where there isn’t much competition, you need to ask yourself why? Maybe others have found it impossible to make a profit selling to such customers.

Prioritise your market

Attempting to sell to too many types of customers can be very risky. As you risk offering a product that doesn’t really appeal to any of them.

You chances of succeeding if you focus on one or two specific segments and offer an attractive product or service that enables you to become a market leader. Even though you may focus on just one customer segment, that doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t get customers from other areas of business.

Customer Profiling

Once you have identified which niche to target, you can compile more information about a potential buyer.

You need to find out:

  • If you sell to individual consumers, what is their gender, age, marital status, occupation, income, location and lifestyle? If you sell to businesses, where are they based, what are their key products, who do the sell to and how much do they spend?
  • What do they buy and how much?
  • What makes them choose one supplier over another? Who makes the buying decisions and who influences that choice?
  • Where do they buy? Directly from a supplier or through an intermediary?
  • What are the peak periods of demand and how long does it take them to make a decision to buy?
  • Will they pay cash upfront or will they expect credit? Will they insist on a discount for bulk orders?
Reaching out to your customers

No matter how brilliant or unique your product or service is, you will face some form of competition. To succeed, you need to stand out from the rest especially if you plan to enter a highly competitive market.

You need to find out exactly what your product offer that customers are not already getting elsewhere. Competing purely on price rarely works for a business. Also it’s not as simple as telling people about your product or service features either.

You need to establish how you are going to let your target market know about your product or service and convince them to make the purchase. Then think about how you will sell your product to your customers, these methods are called sales channels.

Identifying the benefits

You may have a product that has a host of fancy new features, but what customers want to know is how these features will benefit them.

As an example, think about modern televisions. No matter how fascinating the specifications are of a television that offer 1080p resolution, this is a feature. The key benefit provided by such technology is that it enables people to watch better quality television from their home. If you were selling the television, this is something you would focus on.

Try to identify the full range of benefits you are offering. It is always best to be able to convey these in quantifiable terms. For example, saying your triple glazing window products stops heat escaping from a house, you need to say that it can save the average household £200 a year in heating costs. Doing this is a much more convincing reason to buy.

Strive to be different

A unique selling point (USP) provides a business a clear reason why customers should buy from them rather than someone else. If you are lucky your business may have more than one USP.

Your USP might indeed be something completely new. However, it is more likely to be in some way more appealing than others – be it faster, friendlier, more reliable, more convenient or located nearer to customers.

Smaller businesses are able to compete with larger businesses by being more flexible and offering a more personal service. Don’t make the mistake of just being cheaper. If competitors reduce their prices, suddenly you might not be special at all.

×

Business Evaluations

Point of sales

You need to have in place a cost effective method of selling. Some businesses set up a shop or an outlet and get customers to come to them. Others travel to the customer to sell face-to-face.

An option might be to sell to other businesses such as a shop or a re-seller. You can even sell at distance by direct mail, over the phone or online. You may find your business using multiple channels to sell.

You need to decide which channels you are going to use. If you are still unsure, look at your customer profile information to find out how your potential customer make purchases.

Let People know you exist

Before you launch your business, you need to let your potential customers know you exist. Dump De Fridge can assist (see Marketing Solutions).

Here are the basics:

Decide which media is going to be the most effectively seen or heard by your target market. This could be advertisements, newspaper, television, signs and billboards, radio, websites, business directories and leaflets.

In clear and concise language, tell your market why they should buy from you. Draw their attention towards the benefits you offer and emphasise your unique selling points (USP). Make sure your potential customers know how they can buy from you.

Doing your maths

Business is about making money and cash is king. You need to be able to sell enough of your products or service at high enough prices to cover your overheads and then have a reasonable profit left to pay yourself. Many businesses underestimate their costs and overestimate their sales – with grave circumstances.

Before you start your business, you need to be able to put a reasonably accurate forecast of the income you expect the business to earn.

Then by subtracting all of the potential overheads from your income will tell you whether or not the business is likely to be feasible.

If you find the figures don’t stack up, you will need to make some changes.

Sale forecasts

Your monthly sales will start at zero. So it is important to be realistic about how quickly you are going to be able to build them up. You must ask yourself:

  • When will you start selling?
  • How much time can you spend selling?
  • How long will it take to sell to each customer?
  • What are your chances of success?

It is essential to no add extra sales to balance the figures; you could be storing up serious trouble in the future. So your market research will be valuable.

Face to face sales:

If you are going to be travelling to your customers, the important questions are how many sales visits are you going to be making and how many are likely to be successful?

You may estimate that you will be spending three afternoons a week travelling, visiting two customers each time. That’s six visits a week in total.

Three of those customers might tell you they are going to stick with their existing suppliers. Two might say they might be interested, but they won’t purchase from you until you are more established and one may agree to place a trial order of £500 (your total sales figure for the week).

Direct mail:

Suppose you want to send direct mail to 1000 customers, asking them if they would be interested in a copy of your product catalogue. A typical response rate could be 2 percent (20 out 1000 will order a catalogue). A quarter of those (5 people) may place an order, spending perhaps an average of £120, giving you a sales figure of £600.

Passing trade:

If you are opening a shop, how many people are likely to come in and how many of these people will make a purchase in your shop?

For example, if the average daily ‘footfall’ of shoppers visiting the high street in which you plan to open your shop was 1600. A fraction of these people will be interested in what you are selling (1 in 20, a total of 80 a day). Then only around a fifth of these customers will decide to come in and have a look around the shop (16).

Then assume that half of these customers make a purchase, spending on average of £40. It would give you a daily sales figure of £320. A lot will depend on your costs. Maybe this figure would generate enough profit. This is for you to work out yourself in your forecast.

Calculating your costs

Whatever sales you forecast, there is still one question to answer. Will your businesses income be sufficient?

Start by working out how much you need to sell to cover your costs. Calculate all your direct costs you incur each time you make a sale. For example, how much will you have to pay for materials, packaging and wages?

Then subtract your direct costs from your estimated total sales will give you an estimated gross profit figure. For example, if your direct costs are £3 and you sell the product for £5, you make a gross profit of £2 each sale.

From these figures you can work out a gross profit margin. You obtain a gross profit margin by dividing your gross profit by your selling price and then multiplying it by 100.
(£2 divided by £5 multiplied by 100 = 40 percent)

That means every time you make a sale, 40 percent of its value can go towards covering your overheads.

If your total overheads each year are £15000, to break even you will need to sell £37500 (ie £15000 divided by 40 multiplied by 100).

Calculate the results

These simple but essential calculations provide invaluable information for you at an early stage. Your figures may tell you that your business is likely to be a success.

If you are sure you have been realistic with your figures and they equal a positive net profit – congratulations, you might be on to a winner. If the numbers don’t look so good – don’t give up. There are always ways of making it work. You can contact Dump De Fridge for advice.

Start-up advice

If you are expecting your business to have a slow start, you might want to keep working part time until your business takes off. If you are unemployed, you may be entitled to additional help to help set your business.

There may be other options. Perhaps you are planning to sell through the wrong channel. If you worked with an agent or sold in bulk to other businesses, the numbers might work out better. Perhaps you just need to put more effort into selling, making time to visit more customers more frequently.

If your profit margin is too tight, look for ways to slim your costs. Maybe you could work from home instead of renting premises. Perhaps you should sell online. Also think about whether you could increase your prices.

If you are confident that your business will be financially viable, you will need to do some more detailed calculations to find out how much it will cost to get up and running.

Cost efficiencies

The first few months of running your business can be tough. You may be faced with higher costs than anticipated and not as much sales or money coming in as expected.

You need to work out how much money you need to get your business up and running and think about where you are going to get it from.

Working out how much your start-up costs are going to be will help you to be in control of your finances from the outset. You will also be able to work out if you will be able to spread your start-up costs, or you will be able to identify areas where you can reduce your spending.

Start-up costs realities

Some people need very little money to get their business up and running. You might already have your own tools or work from home. Others will need to make purchases, such as machinery, computers or vehicles. At first it might be wise to lease such items.

If you plan on renting premises, the landlord will expect a deposit and rent upfront. You may have to fit out, decorate and furnish the building as well as considering possible service charges on the premises. If you are manufacturing products, you will need to purchase materials and packaging. If you are opening a shop, restaurant or bar, you will need to stock up on goods, and without trade history you may need to pay for goods upfront.

Write down how much money you will require to kick start your business. Account for everything. Even small expenses can mount up.

Monthly cost expenditures

There will be bills to pay such as:

  • Telephone
  • Utilities
  • Tax
  • Insurance
  • Business rates
  • As well as a range of other overheads your business will incur. There might be interest to pay back on bank loans and also small things you will buy such as tea and coffee. It all adds up.

How much will you need to pay people each month? This could involve employees, accountants or other services. Also don’t forget wages for yourself too.

Remember, that generating sales costs money. Travelling to visit customers or paying for phone calls adds to your costs. If you’re making or selling products, you will need to keep paying for more materials or stock.

Forecasting cash flow

Many new businesses find that money comes in much more slowly than anticipated, and it’s not just a case of waiting to make sales. Some of your customers will expect credit. Even if you make a sale in April, you might not get paid until June or July. Meanwhile, your supplier’s might demand cash on delivery, which is likely to place tension on your finances.

Sourcing finance

Most people starting a business do so by using their own savings. Others ask friends or family members for a loan. If you do this, it is recommended to agree how you will pay them back and agree what will happen if the business fails and they haven’t been fully repaid. It is recommended that you get the details drawn up in a legally binding document signed by all parties.

They tend to be interested once you’ve been trading for a while. You could arrange a small overdraft on your business bank account. Bear in mind, you might be asked for some form of personal guarantee on your borrowing.

You may qualify for financial help; there are loans and schemes that could be available to you. Try not to rely of grants as there is no guarantee they will be available or you will be eligible.

Raising money from a bank or private investor can be difficult. This is an area where Dump De Fridge Financial Solutions can help in assisting all of the above to raise and realise capital for their fledging businesses. Email or call us today, we will only be too happy to assist.

Business Start-Up Costs

Low cost business set up

Much of this will depend on the type of business you are planning to start, but it is possible to set up a business without spending a lot of money.

You must have the correct outlook and not be afraid to buy or use second hand equipment. You should also be resourceful at every opportunity. Getting help from others will be vital.

Starting a business on a tight budget is possible, but you need to be creative and willing to make compromises. The fancy office or flash company car will have to wait.

Working from home

Running the business from home and not having to pay rent and rates for a commercial property will keep your businesses overheads down. However, there are some mortgage or tenancy agreements on residential property that do not allow this. Also check that running a business from home doesn’t invalidate any domestic insurance you may have and that you are not contravening any regulations.

Using what you’ve got

If you have a computer at home it will help. You will be able to do a lot of things from online market research and keeping financial records, through to producing marketing material and maintaining a basic website.

You could use your existing telephone line for business calls, but there is the possibility of someone you live with answering a prospective customer phone call and how it would appear to them.

You can also use your own vehicle for business purposes or get help from family or friends to help with picking up supplies or making deliveries.

Don’t be afraid to borrow

Friends, family and people you may know through work might be able to help you out. It may seem like your being cheeky at times but if you don’t ask, you won’t get. Look after whatever you have borrowed and give things back in the same condition it was given to you.

Buying second-hand goods

If you cannot borrow something you need, try to rent or lease it, but for only as long as you require. If you have to buy, check local newspapers, shops or online for second hand equipment.

Find opportunities to barter rather than paying. For example, if you are a mechanic, you could offer a free service to a graphic designer’s car in return for them getting leaflets done for you.

Source the cheapest suppliers

Search for the cheapest suppliers (often can be found online). When buying face-to-face, always try haggle the price down and only buy goods that meet the specifications you really need. Using the right support network will help you keep costs down.

Help and support

When starting managing your own business you will eventually face tough challenges and have to make difficult decisions. There might be times when you need specialist advice and at other times, be able to turn to people you know for support will help. Dump De Fridge is willing to help and support businesses, contact us today.

Find an accountant

A good accountant will tell you how to organise your business to make it as financially rewarding for you. Find an accountant with experience of working in your business area.

Find a mentor

A mentor is often someone who has gone through a similar experience of setting up a business. Mentor is considered as a supportive form of development. A reliable mentor will be an experienced and successful business person – Speaking with your mentor will help you to decide whether your ideas are worthwhile.

Look to family and friends

Receiving support from your family and friends is vital – even if they know nothing about business. Knowing that they are behind you can make a difference.

Business networking

Communicating with other business people enables you to share ideas and experiences. This is known as ‘networking’. It is recommended to join your trade association or getting involved in local and national small-business organisations to help build up a network.

Online networking

There are a number of different online networks that your business will be able to participate in including email lists, forums, video conferencing and chat rooms. Networking events is a more traditional form of business relationship building, but in this technological era the internet has provided another way for businesses to communicate.

Strategic Planning Priorities

Sort out other issues

There are many issues to address before you can take your idea forward. These include when you are going to start, where you are going to be based and how you are going to equip yourself so you can run the business effectively.

Set out a reasonable timetable and decide exactly when you are going to start your business. Leave enough time to tackle every issue so that you can move faultlessly from your current situation to working for yourself. As soon as you have decided when you are going to start you can turn your attention other important matters.

Deciding on premises

Your business idea may allow you to run from home. However, check the term of your mortgage, rental or tenancy agreement and insurance policies don’t prevent you from doing so. You might need permission from your lender or landlord and you may have to upgrade your insurance cover. If you need to make structural changes to your home to run a business, you may have to seek planning permission. If in doubt, you can seek advice from your local council. See Dump De Fridge Property Solutions.

If you require premises

Make a list of the exact requirements you need from your premises. Allow plenty of time before starting your business to find somewhere suitable and to sort out paperwork and finance. For some businesses, location is vital and for others space is more important. You need to think about whether you have enough money to decorate or renovate the premises. Service charges may be included too. See Dump De Fridge Property Solutions.

Be safe, legal and secure

Assess all the potential risks and hazards at your workplace to you and others. Complying with all relevant health and safety, access and waste disposal regulations is crucial.

Some businesses also need special licenses to trade – For example, is you are planning on trading alcohol & spirits you need a license from your local authority to sell.

Assess the safety and security of your premises. You will need effective locks and secure windows, while smoke detectors and burglar alarms are recommended.

Decide how you will protect your equipment and business data. You need to back up you computer data often; this can be simple like copying data to disks or storing these offline.

It’s also a good idea to think about security – marking computer equipment, which may increase the chances of recovering it in the event of theft.

Prepare yourself

Even if your work from home, you may still need to buy office furniture. Make sure you have adequate heating, lighting, ventilation and access too. You need to regard you own health and safety.

You may have addressed your IT needs, but you need to check that the machinery or equipment you need can be delivered before you launch. The same applies to any vehicles that you need to run your business.

From pens to pencils and paper to paperclips, you’re likely to need some office basics. You also need market materials and business stationary. You may not be able to get business stationary done until your business is legally registered but that doesn’t stop you from doing the design work and adding the necessary details at the last minute.

Connect your business

If you are planning to work from home, consider whether you need a separate business telephone line.

  • Do you need to buy a business mobile phone?
  • What if someone needs to send you a fax?

You may already have access to the internet, but you may have to upgrade your broadband to improve your business’ online capabilities.

Line up suppliers

Work out what supplies you need and when you need them. Identify potential suppliers and make initial contact with them. Don’t be afraid to shop around for the best deals and try to negotiate prices and credit terms. Only buy what you need.

Think of a name

Choosing a name is one of the more enjoyable parts about starting your own business. Think of one that tells customers what you do and portrays the correct image.

Check with business directories, the internet and Companies House to make sure that somebody else is already trading under the name you are planning to use. If they are, think again.

Make sure the name isn’t offensive and that it doesn’t break any laws. You can’t imply a link with government or monarchy. You also cannot call yourself a limited company, plc, community interest company, charity or trust if you aren’t one.

Recruitment & staff

If you are planning on employing people, begin recruiting them shortly before you launch. Decide how many people you need and on what basis (temporary, part-time, full-time).

Taking on people – whichever way you choose to do it – will always mean some form of investment for your business. But it’s also important to remember that taking this investment seriously can make it more valuable. Starting up a business takes a lot of your time and having an extra hand with the day to day running allows you more time to focus on growing and developing it for the future.

Opening a bank account

Even if you simply opt for self employment, it is advised you keep your business and personal finances separate.

Limited companies must open a business account, but you will only be able to set one up when your company has been registered.

Find a bank that offers the most favourable terms (including charges for paying in and withdrawing money as well as interest rates on overdrafts and credit balances) and find out about their full range of services. Ask them about their online business facilities.

Bookkeeping

Choose whether you are going to use paper or computer based book keeping system. If you plan on using an accountant to help with your book keeping, it is important to find the right one. Dump De Fridge can assist you with this. Just email or call us today.

Pre launch marketing

By now you should already know which customers you need to target, now you need to let them know about your new business. Using your customer profile you will able to use the best method of communicating your sales message to potential customers. For some businesses it can be simply posting leaflets, for others they may need to use different types of advertising.

Having work lined up in advance will help your business start up positively. Also don’t forget to create a website for your business.

Business Planning

Creating a business plan

A well thought out business plan will explain your main strategies and objectives over the initial few years. This allows you to plan your businesses development, be able to gauge its performance and convince others how well managed the business is.

Your start-up business plan needs to explain clearly and concisely the nature of the business and its market. It should include financial forecasts and details of financial requirements you require, as well as details explaining how you intend on managing the business.

Detail your business and market

Explain the background to your idea. Describe its product or service; explain how long you have been developing it and the steps you have been taking.

Outline the key characteristics of your target market in your customer segmentation, such as their gender, age, income, location (for consumers) or turnover and industry (for businesses). Create a list identifying your competitors with their strengths and weaknesses.

Describe how you intend to meet your customers’ needs and specify your sales channels. Explain how you will promote the business and briefly outline the experience and skills of those who will manage the business. Also include how you will control sales, marketing, admin, finance and production (if applicable). List any sources or support or mentors.

Supply financial information

Always provide realistic sales forecast and include a financial forecast. Summarise how much money you expect the business to be flowing in and out each month.

Prepare a profit and loss forecast for the next few years and calculate the turnover you need to break even.

Use the cash flow forecast to show how much finance the business may require, detailing how much, when and in which form you need it. State what the finance will be used for.

SWOT analysis

SWOT stands for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. Strengths and weaknesses are the internal characteristics and opportunities and threats are external.

Your strength will provide opportunities. For example, having a superior product (strength) might allow you to win business over a competitor with an inferior product (opportunity). You weaknesses pose a threat. For example, relying on one client (weakness) could be disastrous if they go bust (threat).

Create a box split up equally into four. In the two top boxes list ‘strengths’ and ‘opportunities’. List your weaknesses and threats in the two bottom boxes. Briefly explain how you intend to exploit opportunities and overcomes threats.

Executive summary

This highlights the most important points of your business plan, such as the strategic plans and targets you have set for your business, allowing people to speed-read your plan. Because of this, it needs to be at the front of the document with the heading ‘Executive Summary’.

Complete the document

Many business plans can be too long. Try to keep yours brief, yet comprehensive and well considered. Aim for fewer than 10 pages. Put more detailed financial forecasts and similar information in the appendices at the back. Put a cover on your business plan and give it a title. A contents page needs to be added to the front and make sure the document is accurate and that it looks professional. Remember financial information needs to be accurate and realistic.

Reassess your plan

Try to look at your plan fairly. Does it accurately represent your business idea? Get an adviser to give you feedback and be prepared to make changes.

Your business plan can be something you keep coming back to, not something you produce and then leave to gather dust. It should be considered as a valuable tool that will help you to run your business better.

Start your business

Once you have a suitable business plan, enough money and key logistic issues are sorted you should be in a position to start your business.

There are different legal forms for business to choose, known as structures. It is important to pick one that is best suited to your needs.

Decide which structure is most suitable for you. There are four main structures:

  • Sole trader
  • Partnership
  • Limited company
  • Limited liability partnership

There are pros and cons for all structures. Please contact Dump De Fridge for more information.

Sole traders

The majority of people starting small businesses become a sole trader. Its quick easy and cheap. Sole traders can employ people, keep simple accounts and submit tax returns to HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). Tax and national insurance (NI) payments are likely to be lower than a limited company, but sole traders are liable for business debts but they are entitled to fewer social security benefits.

Looking at other options

Setting up a limited company is the most common alternative. Even though you own it and work for it, a limited company is a separate entity, which means you will only be personally liable for debts in exceptional circumstances. Compared to sole traders, there will be more administration required by you and NI payments may be higher.

If you start up with someone else, you could form a partnership or limited liability partnership (LLP). In an ordinary partnership, you are personally liable for the partnerships debts even if another partner caused them. In an LLP you are protected.

If you want to run a business to benefit the community rather than for purely commercial reasons, you can set up a community interest company (CIC). CICs give social enterprises the benefits of limited company structure, but there are additional features to ensure they operate for the good of the community, not private gain.

Setting up as any of these options will be slightly more complicated and expensive than being a sole trader. Each does have its advantages though. If in any doubt, seek advice and contact Dump De Fridge today, (we are here to help).

To become a sole trader, you must notify HMRC within the first three months of starting up. You will be told what to do about paying tax and NI.

If you are starting a limited company, most people use a registration agent, solicitor or accountant. Typically costs start at £100. A limited company must be registered with Companies House.

Certain businesses need to apply for licenses or register with one or more organisations. You will have to register for business rates if you have taken on premises.

If you are interested in starting your own business, contact Dump De Fridge via email or telephone without delay. We are a one stop shop for business, your business.

Retirement planning
We all know, pensions can be complicated especially as many rule changes, to both private and state pensions, have been made over the years. Occupational schemes are pension provisions arranged by employers. The main two types of schemes are defined benefit or defined contribution. A substantial body of legislation is in operation governing employers pension arrangements and all employers are currently thinking about “Auto-enrolment” that requires them to automatically enrol eligible workers into a qualifying workplace pension scheme to which both must contribute unless the worker chooses to opt out.

Business Services

Secure & Reliable Systems
Dump De Fridge places emphasis on proactive support to pick up any system faults before they can disrupt your business. We specialise in system support, server set up, network security, email services and web design.
Internet Services & Network Security
Networks that are permanently connected to the Internet via broadband are vulnerable to malicious attacks from hackers and virus infection. Having a well-configured firewall will block uninvited visitors whilst allowing limited access to authorised users and services.

Dump De Fridge can provide a fully managed service, stopping all email, web and any threats before they reach your network, allowing you to concentrate on your business. We will analyse your existing network and make recommendations to ensure your data is secure and confidential. In turn we will draw up a security policy for your employees.
Email
Email is an essential resource for companies today and it is vital to ensure accessibility from different workstations, remote locations and also on the move with mobile and other devices. Our email solution covers email distribution for employees with security and spam filtering built in. We prevent misuse and guarantee email privacy. Spam and inappropriate content is also blocked.
Web Services
Dump De Fridge's multi layered technology and URL filtering capability gives you peace of mind against web threats and associated risks. This safeguards your business against web-borne malware, misuse and offensive content.
Network Support
Our network solutions ensure your systems are kept in the best possible health. Dump De Fridge’s automated network monitoring system warns of potential issues before they become critical problems, enabling us to rectify them efficiently. With remote support we also can resolve issues immediately to allow your business continuity.

Our network solutions cater to a simple second line support for existing staff or a complete outsource of your network.
Virus/Spyware Prevention
Having virus and spyware protection can effectively reduce compromising your IT system. How effective this is relies importantly on how the software is configured and is regularly updated to prevent the latest viruses from entering your system.

We can provide guidance on how to avoid virus infection and advise on the most suitable software for your business to minimise risk.
Disaster Recovery & Offsite Backup
Disasters can occur with your data when you least expect it. It’s vital that your business can be operational again as soon as possible and critical data urgently recovered.

Dump De Fridge can provide your business with a Disaster Recovery Plan to ensure you are managing: Data back up, documentation about your back ups, a tried and proven recovery solution and offsite storage and backup.
Improve Productivity & Collaboration
Dump De Fridge can offer a document sharing solution that centralises document storage through a SharePoint service product. This will increase productivity and collaboration, ensuring the latest versions of documents are always used and managed centrally.
Office Relocation Services
Business continuity is vital during any office relocation when transferring your IT system from one location to another. A technically complex job with associated threats and risks can be mitigated through effective planning, facilitation and managing these changes by our office relocation service.
Remote Access
As companies expand and conduct business internationally, it is important for them to be able to access their IT systems from anywhere in the world. Dump De Fridge’s IT Solutions can provide this flexibility to access your files and data, connecting to your company’s intranet and email system wherever you may be travelling.

Home Services

Dump De Fridge’s IT Solutions are also applicable for the home. When attending to an issue with your computer/s we will give you a full report explaining what the problem was, how we fixed it and importantly a prevention plan. Please find below a list of IT services we offer for the Home.
System Health Check
PC’s tend to run slower as time goes by and even sometimes crash. This can be caused by both hardware and software problems. Health checks on your computer/s ensure they are working efficiently as possible.
This includes: Virus software checking and updates, personal data back up, spyware removal, applications management, hard drive defragmentation and firewall and wireless network inspection.
Upgrades and Repairs
A full diagnostic will be run on your computer/s where we will suggest a cost effective solution to either upgrade or repair your pc. Whether a performance issue inhibited by insufficient memory or other deficiencies, Dump De Fridge provides you with peace of mind that we will try and fix any problem before recommending any hardware upgrade for your PC or laptops.
Internet Sharing
In your home you want the flexibility to share Internet access across all devices. We can provide you with the means necessary to configure the most appropriate set up for your home. We can also implement required restrictions on time spent on the web and content to protect your children from accessing harmful sites.
Home Networking
The home environment has become increasingly busier with children growing up and more individuals needing access to the Internet. In this case, you may consider home networking so you can share files, printers and one Internet connection among various computers and laptops.
Virus/Spyware Prevention
Having virus and spyware protection can effectively reduce compromising your home computers. How effective this is relies importantly on how the software is configured and is regularly updated to prevent the latest viruses from entering your system.
We can provide guidance on how to avoid virus infection and advise on the most suitable software to minimise risk of viruses in your home computer/s.

Services and fees
Services offered by lettings agents usually break down in to three parts:
  • The basic service is the introduction of a Landlord to a tenant. The cost to the Landlord for this service is normally a percentage of the total rent over the term of the tenancy and is charged up-front. The commission for this service is normally between 7% & 12.5%.
  • Tenants are charged a so-called "administration fee" up-front. This includes the processing of the application, and usually involves prospective tenants undergoing credit searches. Fees can vary widely, and can range from £50.00 - £300.00. Often fees are non-refundable, unless the landlord withdraws from the process.
  • Many agents will offer to collect the rent from a tenant for an additional 2-3% commission calculated as above.
  • Full Management is the term most often used to describe the day-to-day management of a rental property. Many agents provide this service on properties which they have let for a commission of between 7% and 12.5%. This part of the commission is normally charged monthly.
  • Let only range from £275 - £325

A renewal fee will normally be charged if the tenant extends or renews their tenancy. This tends to be at a slightly lower rate than the original introduction fee. Additional charges are often made for drawing up the Assured Shorthold Tenancy agreement and protecting the tenant’s deposit to comply with the Tenancy Deposit Scheme legislation. Renewal fees can vary in cost; form £30.00 to over £100.00.

Let to buy

The Basics
  • With Rent to Buy you rent a newly built home at approximately 20% below the market rate for up to five years (exact period of time varies by property).
  • Can also be called Rent to Save or Intermediate Rent.
  • During that time period you have the option to buy the property or to buy part of the property under a Shared Ownership scheme.
  • When you get to the end of the time period you either have to buy part of the property or leave.
How does it work?
  • Homes are made available to rent with a shorthold tenancy at a reduced rate of 80% less of local market rents.
  • The expectation (although not obligation) is that this shorthold period of paying less rent gives you the chance to save for a cash deposit so you can apply to buy a share of the home later. After the shorthold has lapsed, you can purchase the property on shared ownership terms, or move.
  • This shorthold tenancy period can be anywhere between 6 months and 5 years, thus giving you varying levels of security and time to save.
  • Different housing associations use different names, such as Try Before You Buy, Rent Save Buy, Rent to Own, Intermediate Market Rent and more! So check the terms of what you are being offered by a housing association before signing up.
  • Be aware there is very limited availability under this scheme. The exact number varies by local authority.

You are eligible if:

  • your household earns £60,000 a year or less (or £64,300 if you are looking at homes in London). A household can be one person, or you and a partner or you and a friend
  • you are a first time buyer, or you used to own a home but can’t afford to buy one on the open market now
  • you have a good credit history
But, to make it more complicated, there are further eligibility criteria, which differ depending on the housing association the property is offered through. Priority is normally given to certain groups such as existing housing association tenants and council tenants, people that fit with local priorities, as well as first time buyers. Contact or email Dump De Fridge today for further information.

Should I do it?
  • If you are eligible, it really then depends on the property, the housing association’s offer and whether you will take advantage of the reduced rent to save up for a deposit. The offer is so varied from one housing association to another, you really need to read the small print of what is being offered before weighing up if it will be beneficial for you
  • On the plus side, this scheme may give you access to properties that you otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford. You are also dealing with a social landlord, which may offer you an extra feeling of security
  • One down side though is that if house prices rise during the period you are renting, they might rise beyond your reach. A longer rental period puts you at greater risk of this.
  • If you are looking at signing up and eventually buying the property, apply with Dump De Fridge Financial Solutions filling out our enquiry form.
How do I do it?
  • First, you can register with Dump De Fridge. We will assess your application and tell you if you are eligible and add you to our database. This is worth doing as we may contact you directly if a suitable property becomes available.
  • Find a property you like the look of, and ring the number on the advert to check your eligibility.
  • And take it from there. But remember, we’re on your side.
